| Quote: | A housewife at Rejang Park in Sibu was attarcted to her garden by fresh fragrance late one night last month.
In the rain-soaked garden after an early evening shower, the fiftyish woman, who identified herself as Mrs Hii, was stumped to see what is known as the iron tree in full bloom.
She scurried back to the house and dragged her husband, named Teck Leong, to the garden to see Nature's miracle of renewal.
The couple sat in the garden for a while, enjoying the tranquility of the night admist the sweet scent from the stalks of tiny white flowers that glowed in the dim moonlight.
The iron tree is a tropical shrub with blade-like leaves know scientifically as dracaena fragrans (pronounced druh-see-nuh fray-grans). It was 200 years since the scrub at Teck Leong's gardedn last bloomed-at that time in his late father's house.
Teck Leong took the plant with him when he moved to Rejang Park, and kept it in a corner of his garden for sentimental reason-it reminded him of his father.
"I could still smell the sweet scent of the flowers in my father's house 20 years ago," he told reporers taking photographs of the blossoms in his garden the next day.
He was surprised to see the numerous strings of tiny white flowers cascading like a stream and canopying the plant like a jewelled crown.
After we left Teck Leong's house that morning, we began hearing of dracaena fragrans blooming vitrually all at the same time in and around the town.
One horticulturist, who did not want to be named, described it as a phenomenon. "There were flowers before but confined to individual homes. There is no known flowering season for the iron tree-unlike the Japanese Cherry Blossom," he said.
But this time, he note, all the dracaena fragrans bloomed as if in harmonious synchromesh. Could the distrupted flowering pattern be due to global waring or happily something less foreboding like the present uncertain economic times taking a turn for the better?
Whatever the reason, dracaena fragrans is grown at homes throughout the tropcal belt. the plant might flower only twice in its lifetime, and when a rare full bloom occurs, the Chinese believe it portends good omen.
As such, feng shui sensehs often recommend families to place their iron trees at strategic places in their homes to harmonise the flow of energy.
Many businessmen believe correct placeement(in term of geomacy) of the plant in their office can help unify all the Zodiac elements and boost business.
The Chinese also regard the iron tree as plant of prosperity because of its close association withe the worship of the Goddess of Mercy or Guan Yin, a deity to whom people seek compassion and forgiveness. Couples hoping for first-born sons also seek Guan Yin's help.
Luck is what Liew Nguk Ming, managing director of Furama Seafood Reataurant, associates with the iron tree. He has palced a plant at a prominent spot in front of his house.
He recalled the plant first flowered five yeras ago. At that time, he was struggling to keep his business afloat. Then one day, the plant bloomed and Liew felt spiritually lifted. With renewed hope, he put his mind to revitalising his business and managed to bounnce back.
However, he admited it sounndedd rather superstitious putting his trust in a flower for turnaround of his business, saying it's more a comfort, somethign to hold on to, and certainly better than having to cope with the current economic downturn alone.
Another housewife, Doreen Wong, , also has a soft spot for dracaena fragrans-more for personal than business reasons.
At first, she thought the plant was ugly and boring with dull lifeless green leaves. She had never seen it bloom and hers never brought any exictment to ther family.
"I put the plant at one side of my garage. T thought I jsut kept it there to help recycle the air mixed with the emission of myy car."
Sometimes she even forgot to water the plant but it did not wither and die dispite the neglect.
Then one night, Wong recalled, she was led by a fragrancee to her garage, and while she was searching for the source of the sweet scent, a neighbour pointed her to a corner of the garage.
The her surprise, she found the plant in full lboom with the flowers facing her neighbour's room.
"I was filled with guilt and shame, This is the plant I have been neglecting for uyears. Now it has bloomed for my family which is a good omen."
She vowed never to neglect it again.
Will the rare floweering of dracaena fragrans really bring businessmen luck in this year of the Earth Ox with the global economy in crisis?
The last cycle of the Earth Ox was in 1949-60 years ago. The world also suffered a recession back then but the economy recovered towards the end of the year with careful planning. By 1951, the recession was over.
The economic downturn of 1997 also occured in the year of Ox. It was again overcome with careful planning and management.
In the current Earth Ox year, chinese astrologists expect many people will look for a quick solution but acording to the Zodiac signs, the Ox favours a well-planned formula to lay the foundation for long lasting results.
Therefore, as businessmen and investors work for global economic recovery, let the flowers of dracaena fragrans in their office invigorate them with their sweet scent. Even if the plant is not blooming, let the green leaves keep the spirit of optimism alive.
The blossoms from the iron tree in Sibu had witheres at the end of last month but the spirit the brought with their inspirational fragrance lives on in the people.
The pace of life had returned to normal, and the people have since kept their chins up, looking forward to a bullish year as they fight to get te economy on track. |
Ok, murid2, penat2 cikgu taip artikel ini, jadi ini homework korang semua, jawablah persoalan2 ini;
*Mengapakah horticulcurist tersebut not want to be named??
*Mengapakah surirumah tersebut berani keluar waktu malam mencari bau wangi? Adakah dia mengingkari pesanan org2 tua??
Ada masa lagi mari kita buat kesimpulan, kesimpulannya, raaaajin betul reporter nie cover berita pasal tumbuhan sampai info ekonomi, astrologi, culture pun dicovernya kan, hehehe.... , then siap lagi gi interview surirumah, businessman, ngan kata2 pemberi semangat at the end of the article.
